Extensive Surgical Expertise: With 34+ years of experience and a proven track record in neurosurgery, Dr. Varma specialises in functional and stereotactic neurosurgery, including specialised surgery for Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, and Chronic Pain. His expertise also extends to Paediatric, Vascular, and Endoscopic Neurosurgery.
Advanced Techniques & Specialised Expertise: He is known for his significant experience with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. His expertise includes being one of the few neurosurgeons in India with extensive experience in DBS.
Pioneer in DBS Surgery: Dr. Varma has been instrumental in initiating and establishing DBS programmes for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease at NIMS, Hyderabad; KEM Hospital, Mumbai; and Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad. He was selected for advanced DBS training in the Netherlands as part of a prestigious Indo-Canadian collaboration.
Leader in Movement Disorder Programmes: He established and successfully ran the Institute of Neurosciences at M. S. Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital, where he was Professor and Head of Neurosurgery since 2008, and set up a fully functional and successful Movement Disorder Programme.
Breakthrough Achievements: Dr. Varma has the distinction of conducting the first successful DBS surgery for Neuroacanthosis in India and the third in the world. He also organised the first International Workshop on Surgery for Movement Disorders, featuring the world’s first live DBS surgery relayed to an interactive forum.
Award-Winning Excellence & Recognition: Dr. Varma has been recognised for establishing the MCh programme in Neurosurgery at M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, serving as a Member of the Board of Studies, NIMHANS, and being invited as a Guest Speaker at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. He is also a Designated Visiting Professor at the Raman Research Institute.
