He completed a residency in general surgery at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) after receiving his degree, and in 1982 he went on to get an MS in general surgery from the University of Madras in India.
The first oncologist in India to focus on treating liver cancers with resection and non-resectional therapies, such as RF ablation, gallbladder cancer with epidemiology, multimodal therapy, and surgery, pancreatic resections, and sphincter preservation for rectal cancer was Dr. Jagannath.
He has 13 video tapes and CDs of his surgical skills in addition to 75 academic publications. He is also a current Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Indian Chapter of the International College of Surgeons, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India).
